New York City

Recently I took a trip to one of my favorite places, New York City.  One of the things that I find so interesting about New York City is the people.  On any given walk around the block you are probably going to hear at least 2 different languages being spoken and signs written in different languages.  While I have always appreciated this, since I have begun my ESL studies I now find this even more interesting.  What an amazing thing, to have so many different cultures together in one city!  It also made me think about how ESL education works in NYC public schools.  I have just started to look into this.  In the meantime I was thinking about how you would find you would make your way around a city when you are unsure of what is being said.  Below is a link to an online ESL dictionary to help with this.  Hopefully more information will come about ESL in NYC :)

It's K-PREP time!  Good Luck!

- This is a link to the DBAC.  Information for EL students starts on page 24.  These pages contain a good list of the things that should be done to determine if a student is an ELL and if so how to proceed, but these should be done when the student enters school.

-Starting on page 29 accommodations that are sometimes used are listed as well as the description of the accommodation.  Accommodations must be used throughout the year in order to use them during K-PREP testing.

Something a little different

This is a link to a blog by Lillie, a self described "passionate traveling teacher who's created over 700 articles spanning 5 continents".

This blog has articles written by young people around the world about an experience they have had.  Some of the articles I've read illustrate how alike we are, while some illustrate the contrasts between our cultures and experiences.
